Social Skills Training

Teaching social skills to young people is often a challenging and rewarding experience. Many times people have difficulty learning social skills when they have sensory or cognitive deficits. However, with careful planning and guided instruction even the most socially unaware individual can learn the most intricate social cues. Read on to find more about social skills training and what it entails.

Teaching social skills to a diverse group

When instructing students with different learning styles, backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses it is important to plan your training session carefully. Intend on maintaining a degree of flexibility within your plan; however, maintain a greater level of cohesion and try to stay focused on your goal. Your students need to understand the goal; for example, if the goal for the day's lesson is to learn how to properly introduce two people, you may find it appropriate to cover when to introduce two individuals, but not to cover how royalty from other countries introduce one another. In other words, stay on topic. You can either write the daily learning goal on a white board at the front of the training area or in another location where the entire class can see it and read it.

Teaching social skills can prove very rewarding as long as you are prepared for your group of individual students and you stick to the daily goal. Remember, good instruction often comes from a flexible, well-prepared instructor who can handle a diverse group while maintaining an effort to reach the ultimate end goal.
