Interpersonal Skills Training

Interpersonal skills training can benefit any organization or individual. Interpersonal skills training involves teaching people how to better relate with others. The result of better relations between individuals is greater cooperation and the more efficient achievement of goals.

Physical and psychological considerations

How individuals relate to one another can vary in accordance with a variety of factors. Gender is one of the more obvious of these factors as are race and socioeconomic background. Individuals are often not just members of one group but instead are members of many groups. Any specific individual is a member of a specific gender and also a member of a particular racial, ethnic and socioeconomic background, for example. Interpersonal skills facilitate communication between people of all types regardless of the number of groups to which each individual belongs.

Verbal and non-verbal components of communication

Communication is one of the most important interpersonal skills. It is important to emphasize that technically two people might speak the same language but the meaning of the words they speak can differ quite significantly. People communicate with one another on both verbal and non-verbal levels. Non-verbal forms of communication include body language and can differ significantly according to culture and other factors. Even facial expression has very different meanings according to cultural context. Interpersonal skills take this into consideration.

Interpersonal skills training focuses on distinguishing the factors that can make people differ in terms of their ability to effectively interact with others. Properly trained individuals recognize these differences and alter their communication styles accordingly. The result is improved communication and more positive interaction.
