Individuals are often not just members of one group but instead are members of many groups. It is important to emphasize that technically two people might speak the same language but the meaning of the words they speak can differ quite significantly. People communicate with one another on both verbal and non-verbal levels. Non-verbal forms of communication include body language and can differ significantly according to culture and other factors. Even facial expression has very different meanings according to cultural context. Interpersonal skills take this into consideration.

Interpersonal skills training focuses on distinguishing the factors that can make people differ in terms of their ability to effectively interact with others. Properly trained individuals recognize these differences and alter their communication styles accordingly. The result is improved communication and more positive interaction.
